This is a discussion of how air combat has been depicted in table-top wargames. The presentation will include commercial family games, such as Dogfight, from Milton-Bradley, up through the immensely realistic and complex Birds of Prey from Ad Astra Games. Michael Scott (co-designer of MiG Killers, Luftwaffe: 1946, and In Harm’s Way: Wild Blue) will lead a discussion of how different companies and designers approached air combat with varying degrees of success. The discussion will cover the evolution of air combat game design and such subjects as scale, altitude, maneuvers, damage resolution, spotting, and weapons. Air combat is a very complicated subject to tackle for game designers and their choices reflect a perception of both the subject and the gamer’s interest.
