1914-16: Ace was a shortened name for the award given to French pilots who became the "movie stars" of thier day. Guynemer,Nungesser, Navarre,Lufbery, and Italy's Baracca. They flew their Nieuport 11-16 "Bebe" against German aces like Immelmann, Boelcke, Wintgens, Leffers, and Paraschau.
