Scott Westerfeld gives an "illustrated lecture" about working with artist Keith Thompson on the Leviathan trilogy, a bio-engineered steampunk version of World War I. Includes digressions on the history of illustration and the future of fan art. Why did illustrated novels fade in the early 20th century? How does illustration change the novel writing process? And how do young readers interact differently with visual media than with pure text? All this, plus walking tanks and weird beasties.
